Project overview and objectives The
aim of the project is to organise a coherent series advanced training
courses in order to give the participants a complete view of the
"problem epilepsy" by promoting the interactions between basic
neuroscientists and neurologists and by creating a common vocabulary
through lectures and tutorial activities.
The EPILEARN training programme will play a key role in increasing
professional knowledge about epilepsy as a treatable brain disorder and
will contribute to the creation of a new generation of researchers,
that in spite of their scientific background will look at epilepsy with
a novel perspective and a solid understanding of the potentials and the
limits of technological and clinical advancements.
Because of the novelty of the treated topics and of the approach, the
participant researchers will have the opportunity to take advantage of
a unique structured series of events in the field of epileptology which
has no comparison worldwide. The faculty of the proposed events
represents a selection of the top research and clinical teams in the
field of epilepsy and epileptogenesis from the most renowned Epilepsy
and Neuroscience Centers worldwide.
The proposed courses are structured to allow the participants to
acquire not only the technical information but also the critical
competence necessary to design, write and conduct an effective research
project/activity in the field of epileptology.
Such complementary skills will prepare the researcher to cope with the
multiple roles that they will be expected to play along their career
path, and that include not only research and development activities but
also supervision, mentoring, communication, project management and
administrative tasks.
In all the events lectures on general and specific topics will be
interspersed with interactive seminars, workshops, and break-out
sessions where small groups of attendees and faculty will be involved
in tutorials and problem-solving exercises.
All the events will be hosted at the facilities of the International
School of Neurological Sciences, located on the island of San Servolo,
Venice (Italy).Target groups
Participants
to the courses will be mainly students with less than 4 years research
experience since obtaining the diploma. A lower share will be composed
from candidates with more than 4 years of research experience. An
overall international balance will be assured by the Scientific
Committee during the selection process. Women candidates will be
encouraged to apply.
